Visit Palermo, visit Monreale
You couldn't land in Sicily without visit Palermo, its county seat. In the past centuries, Palermo has been the bone of contention for Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans, Vandals and Byzantines and, at the end, it fell under the Arab domination. All of these populations left something behind them. Its artistic and arhitectural heritage is colourful and unpredictable and moves between baroque and romanic, liberty, rationalism and arab.
The day of excursion will end in the close Monreale, a little hamlet very rich of relics and monuments. The Cathedral consecrated to Santa Maria Nuova is the most famous church here. In 1174 even the Pope Alexander III congratulated King Whillelm II for building up the church. Here there is the famous fresco representing Christ Pantocrator, hailing straight to the Byzantine Age.
